My friend who is a mother of two children that are vegan from birth chimed in suggesting that the checklist topic for infancy should also include skin to skin contact. She shared “There should definitely be something there about skin-to-skin time/kangaroo care w/ infants. One of my favorite Neonatologists who we had w/ both our babies with told me w/ my son that the mom’s body actually adjusts her temperature to be the perfect temp for the baby, bc I think it was cold in the NPCN (step-down unit after the NICU) one day and I was asking if he’d be cold w/ me like that. Like my son, this doctor was also born at 32 weeks. When he was born they wouldn’t let the parents hold the premies because they thought that was best then. Now they say to hold them as much as you can and do as much skin-to-skin time as possible because they know better now. And breastfeeding is the perfect time to do that, every breastfeeding time…so we did that and tons more. And that’s for all babies, not just premies of course”
