For most of my life, I believed that meat was necessary for a balanced diet. That changed when, at 30 years old, I was told I had very high cholesterol and my doctor recommended statins. I was reluctant to start medication so young, so I asked for three months to see what I could achieve through dietary changes.
After moving to a vegan diet, my cholesterol reduced drastically. From there, the ethical side became impossible for me to ignore. I began questioning the disconnect between the compassion I felt for my dog and the animals I was eating, and veganism became a very easy decision for me.
More recently, becoming a parent made me think deeply about how I wanted to pass those values on to my daughter in a gentle and positive way. That became the inspiration for my children’s book, Kind to All Kinds.
The book helps children recognise that animals have feelings, whether they are the animals we share our homes with, animals raised on farms, or animals living in the wild. At its heart, it is about encouraging children to see all animals with kindness, compassion and care.
